Folks,
I note that the 4WD places like ARB and TJM etc., sell bull bars that will fit our Surfs. But will bars from other models like early Forerunners of Hiluxes fit ours? If so, I might be able to pick up a second hand one because I want to spray it and colour match it to the body duco.

They should sell a bullbar/winchbar for the 4Runner that will fit. Also pre 1997 Hilux bull/winch bars will fit. Below are the ARB part numbers for both 4Runner and Hilux.

4Runner/Hilux Bullbar:

3214020

4Runner/Hilux Winchbars:

3414070 (without guard flares)
3414060 (with guard flares)

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Chris.

Earlier model bars can be made to fit. Width and height wise is fine, but the corner sections aren't exactly right, slightly short and not wide enough if you have flares. Also it would have to be off an IFS model to bolt on with relative ease, as models with Solid Front axle have different mounting positions, but this goes for any year model Hilux with a solid front end.

Later model bars from 98-05 Hiluxs can be made to fit also with only minor modifications. A few holes need to be re drilled and side brackets bent slightly and re drilled. They fit OK, but do have a gap in front of the grill due to the differences in shape of the vehicle front end. The corner sections also are wide enough to line up with the factory flares, but would be to wide for a vehicle without flares. (this is what i have on mine)

So it depends on how good of a fit you truly want, if you want it perfect, then your going to have to get one from an equivalent model IFS surf/4runner/hilux (solid axle front end models can be made to fit, but requires fabrication work).

If slight misalignment's don't bother you then earlier or later bars can be made to fit.

I had a ARB winch bar fitted to my 3ltr. It took a bit of hassling of ARB to make sure it was the right one because the 3ltr's have different chassis rails/ bolt holes than the LN130. I had to wait about 2 months for the bar because ARB don't make them very often (that was the story any how). Even then the mechanics said it took alot of swearing and elbow grease to get it on because the holes still didn't line up perfectly. But over all it was worth it because i had it colour coded to the rest of the car and the finished look was very good.
By the way I looked for other bars but noone seemed that keen when the word surf was mentioned as usual. TJM used to make one for the LN130's but I was told they are no longer in production.

Can you post the ARB part number for your bar?

Yeah I know - it was a left handed way of saying "I suspect they farked up and made the wrong bar then had to make it fit" - and then gave the usual - "... oh it's a Surf... cut this re-drill that, blah blah"

ARB part numbers
4Runner
Bullbar
3214060 - mid 89 >SR5 with OE flares
3214070 - mid 89 >except for SR5 with OE flares( non flared version)

Winchbar
3414060 - , mid 89 >SR5 with OE flares
3414070 - mid 89 >except for SR5 with OE flares (non flared version)

Hilux
Bullbar
3214070,SR5 IFS,DC and EC 88> (non flared version)

Winchbar
3214070,SR5 IFS,DC and EC 88> (non flared version)

A Surf with OE flares is regarded as a wide body version ARB part number XXXXX60

And a Surf without OE flares is a normal body ARB part number XXXXX70

And there is only 16 bolts to hold it on.

gb7, did you get an invoice from ARB with your bars part number on it?
If so, does it match up with the numbers above?

I had an ARB Winch Bar fitted to my surf and the only slight problem (which wasn't really) was that the indicator lenses taken from the original bumper did not match perfectly and they had to make some minor mods to get them in. There's a slight gap due to the curvature of the originals not matching the ARB bar.

Other than that, I'm happy with mine. I had it fitted at Northern 4WD in Wangara (light industrial suburb of Perth for those that live in less fortunate locations :D ).

Cheers
:D

Hi GeeBee,

It was about a year ago now but I believe I only paid around $1150-$1200. I had a Safari snorkel fitted at the same time and I'm sure the total bill was about $1500. ARB has a published price list that most ARB authorised agents work to but if you're buying more than one item they can usuallybarter them down.

All I have to do now is get the winch to fill the hole in the front of the bar, but that's a whole other thread and an entirely new negotiation with the financial controller.

Sorry michael I now return to planet earth. The ARB part no. for mine is 3414060; winchbar for the flared 4runner. It cost $1300 plus fitting and $300 painted. The old indicators were to small for the bar and new ones had to be installed. The work was expertly done by the boys at Cross Country 4x4 at Melrose Park (now in their new workshop on South Rd next to the Mitsi dealer). They also fitted a 115l fuel tank, snorkel, 2.5" exhaust and a DP chip. They have conned me into fitting a front mount intercooler which they are doing this week. And their going to get some custom side rails and steps done too. A fool and his money are soon parted!!!!!

I found it hard to get a straight answer anywhere when I was looking at second hand bullbars, so I thought I'd reply to this thread and say that I bought a second hand steel bar (brand unknown) that was fitted to a solid axel narrow track hilux. It went straight onto my 1995 widetrack surf no problems at all. Here are some pics.

Someone asked that not long ago, but unsure if Ironman make one for the Surf/ Hilux yet.
To my knowledge, no one has fitted an Ironman yet.

Email them, from their site.

You need to alter the mountings to suit the IFS front which is a slightly different shape but nothing a few hours with a grinder and some steel won't fix with the use of some brain power

Also how hard would it be make a winch bracket for a non winch bar, as they do for alloy bars.

As hard as you want to make it. If you can weld and have a MIG or stick welder do some research and away you go
